Lake Atitlán is one of those places that instantly takes your breath away. Surrounded by towering volcanoes and dotted with colorful villages, it feels like stepping into another world. When we first arrived, the stillness of the lake and the dramatic backdrop of the mountains left us speechless. Each village around the lake has its own personality, and exploring them was one of the highlights of our trip.

We started in Panajachel, the main hub of Lake Atitlán. It’s a lively town with lots of cafes, markets, and gorgeous lake views. The waterfront along Calle Santander is the perfect spot to sit with a coffee and watch the sunset. We also found some great street vendors selling tamales and fresh fruit—simple but delicious. From Panajachel, it’s easy to catch a boat to the other villages around the lake.

One of our favorite stops was San Juan La Laguna, known for its vibrant murals and Mayan culture. We visited a local weaving cooperative where women demonstrated how they dye fabrics naturally using plants and minerals. The detail and artistry were incredible, and it was inspiring to see the tradition being preserved. We also tried some of the best locally grown coffee we’ve ever had at a small lakeside cafe.

Lake Atitlan isn’t just a place—it’s a feeling of connection, peace, and awe that stays with you long after you’ve left.

Another standout was San Marcos La Laguna, which has a totally different vibe—laid-back and spiritual. We took a yoga class overlooking the lake and swam in the crystal-clear water from one of the small docks. The energy in San Marcos is calm and peaceful, and it’s easy to see why so many travelers are drawn to its meditative atmosphere.

Celebrations

We wrapped up our trip with a visit to Santiago Atitlán, the largest town around the lake. The market was bustling, and we visited the church where locals still practice a blend of Catholicism and Mayan traditions. We even got to see a local festival happening in the square—it felt like we were stepping into the heart of Guatemalan culture.

Our Dream Stay at Lake Atitlán https://melissaandjohntravels.com/our-dream-stay-at-lake-atitlan/ Tue, 02 Jan 2024 16:30:00 +0000 https://melissaandjohntravels.com/?p=8820

When we arrived at our Airbnb in Lake Atitlán, we knew we had found something special. Nestled right on the edge of the lake, it felt like our own private paradise. The property was a beautiful mix of rustic charm and modern comfort, surrounded by lush greenery and with stunning views of the lake and volcanoes. We had seen the pictures online, but the reality was even better.

Our private bungalow was massive, with an open-concept living space that felt airy and inviting. Floor-to-ceiling windows let in natural light and gave us panoramic views of the lake. The decor was cozy but elegant, with natural wood tones and local textiles. The hot tub just outside the bungalow was the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring—we sat there under the stars with a glass of wine more nights than we can count.

The property had not one, but multiple swimming pools scattered across the grounds. Some were more secluded, tucked away behind tropical plants, while others had wide-open views of the lake. We spent lazy mornings lounging by the pool and cooling off with afternoon swims. The whole property felt so peaceful that it was easy to lose track of time.

It wasn’t just a stay—it was an experience that connected us to the heart of Lake Atitlan.

One of the coolest things about this Airbnb was the range of activities it offered. We had access to a canoe and a longboard, which we used to explore the calm waters of the lake. Paddling out early in the morning when the lake was perfectly still was one of the most peaceful and memorable parts of our trip. The property also had a beautifully landscaped yard and a shaded nature patio where we sat and listened to the sounds of the birds and the water.

Staying at this Airbnb made our trip to Lake Atitlán even more special. It wasn’t just a place to sleep—it became a key part of the experience. The mix of luxury, natural beauty, and thoughtful details made it feel like home. We left feeling relaxed, inspired, and already dreaming of coming back.

Take me to Paris, now! https://melissaandjohntravels.com/take-me-to-paris-now/ Tue, 28 Nov 2023 09:30:00 +0000 https://backpacktraveler.qodeinteractive.com/elementor/?p=4677

Paris is one of those cities that just pulls you in—the romance, the history, the food—it’s impossible not to fall in love. From morning walks along the Seine to late-night views of the Eiffel Tower, there’s an undeniable magic about Paris. During our visit, we were completely swept away by the charm of the cobblestone streets, the incredible flavors, and the effortless beauty that seems to linger in every corner of the city.

One of the first things we did was hunt for the perfect pain au chocolat, and Paris delivered. We stumbled upon a small neighborhood pastry shop where the chocolate was rich, the pastry was flaky, and the whole thing practically melted in our mouths. Paired with a coffee at a sidewalk café, it was the perfect Parisian breakfast. We made it a mission to try a different pastry shop every morning—and let’s just say, we weren’t disappointed.

A visit to Paris wouldn’t be complete without experiencing the Eiffel Tower in all its glory. One of the best viewing spots we found was from the Trocadéro Gardens—the open space and fountains make for incredible photos. Another hidden gem is the Pont de Bir-Hakeim bridge, which not only offers stunning views but is also less crowded than other spots. Seeing the tower sparkle at night is pure magic—it’s one of those “pinch me” moments.

Paris isn’t just a city—it’s a feeling, a flavor, and a moment you’ll want to relive forever.

Paris is known for its rich French cuisine, but we were surprised to find some incredible Japanese food as well. We had an unforgettable ramen experience at Kodawari Ramen, where the broth was deep and flavorful, and the noodles were perfectly chewy. Another standout was Takara, one of the oldest Japanese restaurants in Paris, known for its delicate sushi and fresh sashimi. It was amazing to find such authentic Japanese flavors in the heart of France.

And then there’s the hot chocolate. We had the best cup of our lives at Angelina, a historic Parisian tea room. It was rich, thick, and almost pudding-like in texture—a true indulgence. Sitting there, surrounded by gilded mirrors and Art Nouveau decor, we couldn’t help but feel like we’d stepped into another era. That’s the thing about Paris—it makes you feel like you’re part of a timeless story.

Thailand is home to some of the most breathtaking beaches in the world, each with its own unique charm and atmosphere. From powdery white sands and crystal-clear waters to dramatic limestone cliffs and hidden coves, Thailand’s beaches offer something for every kind of traveler. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or a mix of both, the beaches of Thailand deliver an unforgettable experience.

Looking Down Koh Tao

Koh Tao is a paradise for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts. The island is known for its vibrant coral reefs and abundant marine life, making it one of the best places in the world for underwater exploration. Shark Bay and Ao Leuk are two standout spots where you can swim alongside tropical fish and even catch a glimpse of harmless reef sharks. After a day of exploring, the beachside bars and cozy cafes make it easy to unwind while watching the sunset.

Tonsai Beach near Krabi offers a more rugged and adventurous vibe. It’s a rock climber’s paradise, with towering limestone cliffs framing the beach. Even if you’re not into climbing, the laid-back atmosphere, beachfront bungalows, and affordable beach bars make it a perfect spot to relax and take in the natural beauty. The beach is accessible by boat, giving it a more secluded and intimate feel compared to some of Thailand’s more popular beaches.

“Thailand’s beaches aren’t just destinations—they’re experiences that leave you feeling connected to nature and inspired by the beauty of the world.”

Monkey Beach

For a unique and playful experience, Monkey Beach on Koh Phi Phi is a must-see. Known for the wild monkeys that roam the beach and climb the nearby cliffs, it’s a fun and lively spot. The monkeys are curious and often approach visitors, so keep your snacks hidden! The beach itself is stunning, with soft white sand and calm, shallow waters that make it perfect for swimming and snorkeling.

Another highlight is Koh Phi Phi, which is known for its jaw-dropping beauty and lively atmosphere. Maya Bay, made famous by the movie The Beach, is one of the most iconic spots in Thailand. The emerald-green waters, limestone cliffs, and pristine sand make it feel like paradise. Even with its popularity, you can still find quiet spots around the island to relax and take in the natural beauty.

The 15 best Things to Do in Bangkok https://melissaandjohntravels.com/the-15-best-things-to-do-in-bangkok/ Wed, 03 May 2023 12:23:00 +0000 https://backpacktraveler.qodeinteractive.com/elementor/?p=1647

Bangkok is a city that never sleeps—a vibrant mix of tradition and modernity, where golden temples sit alongside towering skyscrapers. From exploring bustling markets to savoring street food and uncovering hidden cultural gems, Bangkok offers an incredible range of experiences. During our time here, we fell in love with the city’s energy, flavors, and rich history.

One of the first things we did was visit the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha). The intricate details of the architecture and the spiritual atmosphere were mesmerizing. Nearby, Wat Pho is home to the giant reclining Buddha and offers traditional Thai massages. A sunset visit to Wat Arun gave us breathtaking views of the Chao Phraya River, and the temple’s spire lit up beautifully against the evening sky.

For a taste of local life, we explored the Chatuchak Weekend Market—a massive maze of over 15,000 stalls selling everything from clothing to street food. The floating markets, like Damnoen Saduak and Amphawa, gave us a glimpse into Thailand’s traditional trade culture as we floated along canals, sampling fresh mango and coconut pancakes. For a change of pace, we wandered through the colorful alleys of Chinatown, where the street food was some of the best we’ve ever had.

“Bangkok is a city of contrasts—where ancient traditions and modern energy collide to create something truly magical.”

Bangkok’s nightlife is legendary. We sipped cocktails at a rooftop bar overlooking the city skyline, danced the night away at clubs in Sukhumvit, and experienced the lively energy of Khao San Road. A quieter but equally fascinating experience was the Jim Thompson House, where we learned about the history of Thai silk and admired the traditional teakwood architecture.

Celebration in the Sing Sing Theater

For a more upscale but offbeat night out, Sing Sing Theater was one of the coolest spots we visited. Its dark, moody interior, with hanging lanterns and ornate metalwork, gave it a mysterious, almost theatrical vibe. Just a few blocks away, we found a hidden underground bar (we wish we could remember the name!) that felt like a secret party spot. The DJs were incredible, spinning deep house and techno late into the night, and the intimate atmosphere made it feel like we’d stumbled upon one of Bangkok’s best-kept secrets.

To unwind, we took a boat ride along the Chao Phraya River, visited the peaceful gardens and monitor lizards at Lumphini Park, and treated ourselves to a spa day with a traditional Thai massage. The city’s incredible mix of chaos and calm is what makes it so special—there’s always something new to discover.

Dreamy AirBnb in Cancun https://melissaandjohntravels.com/dreamy-airbnb-in-cancun/ Sat, 07 Jan 2023 11:32:00 +0000 https://backpacktraveler.qodeinteractive.com/elementor/?p=1599

When we were planning our trip to Cancun, we knew we wanted something more than just a typical beachfront hotel. We stumbled upon this incredible Airbnb—a Mediterranean-style oasis tucked away from the touristy areas—and it completely exceeded our expectations. From the moment we arrived, we felt like we had stepped into a Greek paradise, surrounded by whitewashed walls, terracotta accents, and cascading bougainvillea. It was the perfect blend of luxury, tranquility, and natural beauty.

One of the biggest highlights of the property was the multiple pools. There were a few scattered across the property, each offering a different vibe. Some were more social, with lounge chairs and sunbeds where we could sip drinks and chat with other guests, while others were tucked away in more private corners, perfect for quiet relaxation. We started every morning with a swim, and ending the day with a sunset dip became our little tradition.

The sauna and gym were also a huge bonus. After a long day of exploring Cancun, we’d unwind in the sauna, letting the heat melt away any tension from walking around all day. The gym was fully equipped, which was perfect for John since he likes to keep up with workouts while traveling. We loved how the property managed to balance relaxation with activity—it gave us the best of both worlds.

A perfect blend of Mediterranean charm and Cancun’s energy

One of our favorite parts of the Airbnb was the nature paths that wound through the property. Lush greenery, fragrant flowers, and shaded walkways made every stroll feel like an escape into nature. It was easy to forget we were in the middle of Cancun—it felt like we were transported to a hidden Mediterranean village. The attention to detail in the landscaping and architecture made the whole experience feel so thoughtful and peaceful.

Our stay at this Airbnb completely changed how we view Cancun. It was more than just a place to sleep—it became a key part of our trip. The Mediterranean theme added such a unique charm, and having a mix of relaxation and amenities made it easy to settle in and feel at home. If you’re looking for a place to stay in Cancun that’s beyond the typical resort experience, this Airbnb is the one. We can’t wait to go back!
